What is origins travel?
13 July 2026 · not yet expert-reviewed
Most African travel is sold on wildlife. Origins travel is sold on a question: where did we come from?
It is a different trip, for a different traveller. The destinations are fossil sites, rock-art shelters and excavation floors. The guides are working field scientists rather than spotters. The souvenir is understanding.
This site exists to map that world — the sites worth seeing, the science behind them, and the operators who run these expeditions properly — and to introduce you to them when you’re ready.
Why we don’t just tell you to book
An expedition of this kind costs several thousand dollars and is often planned a year or more ahead. That deserves better than a booking button. So we publish what we learn, we answer questions, and when someone is genuinely ready we introduce them directly to the operator who runs the trip.
Editorial note — this post is a scaffold, not a finished article. It deliberately makes no scientific claims. Every post on this site that does make claims about palaeoanthropology, dating methods, or specific sites must carry
factChecked: trueand name the expert who checked it. We are travel writers, not scientists, and this audience contains actual academics who will notice the difference.
